Hi Mickey. If this is a chronic problem you want to be tested for 1) lactose intolerance, 2) Celiac Disease - allergic reaction to proteins in wheat, rye and barley, 3) other food allergies, 4) intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance in the types of bacteria living in the gut, usually as a result of use of antibiotics), and 5) small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

You may need to find a healthcare provider trained in nutrition and/or functional medicine to help you sort out the cause of your problem.

Best wishes and good luck.

The other poster Vegan is 100% correctomondo. A normal but thin pencil like is usually how it is described indicates a form of bowel obstruction. Either fecal impaction, rare if a young person, or more common is a mass or tumor. This should be evaluated to eliminate colon cancer or precancerous mass in the colon.

When you say "thin stools," do you mean that they are solid but narrow like a pencil, or do you mean that they are watery? If they are solid but narrow, you really need to see your doctor. That could mean that there is something obstructing the colon or rectum. I hope you feel better soon.

I would first look at the food you are eating to see if that could be causing it. Otherwise, it could just be a stomach bug. Try taking some anti-diarrheal medication (like pepto-bismol) but if you have to take it longer than a few days, i would see a dr. It could be a serious condtion.

Poor diet lacking roughage? Could also be directly the result of consuming a food for which you have an intolerance, as with lactose in many people, or coffee.

Viral or bacterial infection also possible, ie. gastroenteritis.
