Three times I tried to post a quote from the bible, and each time it seems that it was removed.

It is a particularly nasty bit I guess, where God tells you what you should do to your son if he's disobedient and drinks alot.
What the quote contains IS offensive and it DOES incite violence, so I've not tried to include the quote again.

To me, it's a classic example of what's wrong with using the bible as a reference for right and wrong.

Anyone care to try and justify this particular passage?

First of all, He wasn't speaking to you, but to His covenant people. So it really isn't your concern.
You never will understand because you refuse to believe the testimony He has borne concerning His Son. In fact, the Bible warns God will increase your obstinacy so that He can enter into judgment with you. Most Christians won't tell you that, but if you want to hate God, He will give reason to.

Obviously there are parts of the Bible that we shouldn't practice today - a lot of it (particularly in the Old Testament) is just recorded history after all.

Anyway, the most modern-day applicability of these verses is, when a kid breaks the law, bring them to the proper legal authorities on the issue (which the elders were at that time). I'd say that's a reasonable understanding of it for today.

the reason Christians don't live by that passage is because they have morality outside the Bible. The fact that they can't realize it is hilarious.

you know all this soul searching you are doing
trying to justify why he's not true etc
is just getting you closer to finding out the real truth
that your God is indeed true
even though you never get your prayers answered in the way you want them answered does not mean he never answered them

I would not be foolish enough to attempt to justify anything that GOD has said.
He, as GOD, doesn't need me to offer justification to HIS WORD.
