There were major battles in terms of defeat for one side and thus victory for the other.

Ft.Sumter which opened the war
Battle of Bull Run (1st Manassas)
The Wilderness Campaign
Antietam
Chancellorsville
Gettysburg
Appomattox which ended the war

Bull Run (7/21/1861)
Antietum (9/17/1862)--bloodiest single day
Gettysburg (July 1863)
Atlanta (July-September 1864)--secured Lincoln's reelection
Appomatax Court House (April 9, 1865)--were Lee surendured, bringing the war to a close
