restart your computer. this may occur when you are adding additions to your work and when the space bar is being pressed it erases. you can do a system restore by clicking: start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and system restore. restore your computer to a day before this problem occured. this won't delete any files.

or you can simply just press insert.

Did you go back to an area of your document to edit or add more text and that is when you discovered this problem? Usually if I have a problem with words and letters getting erased it is because I have bumped the Insert key while typing. Usually if press the Insert key on my keyboard it fixes the problem.

It seems that you have pressed Insert key. If you have laptop keyboard find the key called "Ins" Or if you are working on normall keyboard find the "Insert" Key.
You can make sure the about the on and off status of the Insert key by looking to the status bar of the ms-word and if you would find "OVR" BLACK in color in the status bar so than it is sure Insert key is on. Off the key and try. I hope so it will work.

BountyJack is right. It's the difference between "inserting" your new character, and "overwriting" what's there with your new character.

The insert key on your keyboard will allow you to toggle back and forth between these two modes. You can tell which mode you're in by looking at the bottom of the screen...Just to the left of the word "English" (or other language you may be using), you'll see "OVR", which stands for overwrite mode. When this is black, you're in overwrite mode...when it's grey, you're in insert mode.
