It depends on the situation. Any branch of the military can be attacked anywhere. With jets able to travel thousands of miles from their bases and be refueled in the air, it could be the Air Force, or Navy jets. Quick action may be performed by the Army airborne units. Someone said the Marines would be first, delivered to their destination by the Navy, which is also true. Most Marines will tell you that the Navy is just a taxi service for the Marines. And another one, The Marines are a department of the Navy----the Men's Department.

That answer is actually pretty accurate because the Marines and the Navy work hand in hand. The Marines are almost always first, but they get there through the assistance of the Navy. Navy has more than just boats...

You sort of answered your own question. First the Air Force and Navy pound the hell out of the bad guys then the Marines and Army go in to mop up.

Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) are deployed aboard US Naval Vessels and act as America's Expeditionary Force in Readiness.
The Marines is the only service capable of projecting combined arms teams of fixed and rotary wing air support, infantry, and combat service support in one team. One call gets it all. This is the Naval Component of your Department of Defense.

It is the Navy. If it is a land locked country the Navy deploys to the closest water area. In fact they are deployed before any conflict starts.

The Air Force. The Air Force is usually tasked with strategic missions before any troops hit the ground, a sort of 'clear the way'.

It's the Army, they go in first, they stay the longest, are the last to leave. Army deployments are longer than any other branch of the service, Air Force is the shortest.
