People who claim that certain foods can increase your basal metabolic rate often have no idea about what their metabolism actually is!!

Energy obtained from food used to fuel the essential chemical processes such as maintain cells and basic physiological functions such as breathing. The rate at which energy for these purposes is spent is called the metabolic rate. A high metabolic rate requires a high amount of calories to be spent while a lower metabolic rate requires fewer calories to be spent to maintain the body.

The body spends energy on three main processes, the basal metabolic rate, thermo genesis and the metabolic rate during physical activity. The Basal Metabolic Rate is the rate at which energy is spent in breathing, muscular work, and brain activity etc,. It consumes the most energy, or burns the most calories. The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the most commonly used term when explaining the definition of metabolism. The BMR, is also fairly commonly used interchangeably with resting metabolic rate (RMR) although BMR is slightly higher than that of the RMR.

When you ingest food, your metabolism increases SLIGHTLY due to the thermic effect of food. Foods such as caffeine, coffee, tea, chocolate and a food chemical found in hot chillies called capsaicin, as well as other substances may have a minor effect on the body's total energy expenditure.
The total thermogenic effect of food represents only about 5%. In the overall scheme of things, eating certain food that could increase your metabolism, is NOT likely to cause weight to come off quickly.

Your metabolism is fixed, by things about you that you can't control, like your age, and your sex.

The one thing that really affects your basal metabolic rate is LEAN MUSCLE MASS!! So stop looking for an easy way out, so start doing some cardio and pick up some weights.

There are no short cuts.

The more often you eat the faster your motabolism! i know what you are thinking, but try these following steps and you will see otherwise go and get advise from a dietry specialist, but they will only tell you the same thing i am telling you and i'm doing it for free.... For example You should be consuming food 5 times a day Breakfast: egg whites (no yolk), grilled chicken breast (no skin) Snack: fruit salad Lunch: basmati rice (no more then a clenched hand full), steamed vegies, tuna or salmon Snack: almonds, raisens, yoghurt (low fat) Dinner: Baked potato (no skin), grilled fish, steamed or boiled vegies etc. Note: for the vegies, choose non gassy vegies as vegies such as cabbage and leek will cause you go bloat. Excersise: walking, jogging, swimming and cycling are all good for toning! Hope this helps

Anything that raises the body temp...

Spicy foods... like hot peppers can increase metabolism... but by how much I don't know... ???

There is also a theory on Acid vs Alkaline foods... the theory being that if you eat foods that are acidic it will impeed weightloss...

Don't worry about doing it fast... just be committed to doing it now matter how hard you have to work... and you will succeed...

Don't know about foods, but the best and permanent way is to put on some muscle (not a lot if you don't want to - depends on your motivation). Muscle uses a lot of energy just being maintained and attached to your body. Having more muscle = more energy used just being alive.
Plus you'll look cool.

Eating small meals allows the body to metabolize quicker. Also, don't eat too quickly.
