lol....i know so many people that took their senior pictures to kinkos and had it removed + made copies. i mean, pictures from school can be expensive! i wouldn't think it would be illegal to do so but it's just not the 'right' thing to do.

No, it is not legal. The reason they put this on there is so you will not be able to use that picture. The photographer did the work of taking and developing the pictures and this is how they make their living. The proof is so you can decide if they did quality work and then PAY THEM for what they did if you like it. It also gives you the chance to decide that you don't like the work and then you don't have to pay for the picture. If you remove the proof wording it is stealing. If you get caught doing this it can result in fines (sometimes pretty hefty) and/or jail time.

It is illegal to make a copy of any photo you did not take with out the photographer permission. Copyright last for 75 years after the photographer passes away, even then the family of the photographer can maintain copyrights. Altering a copyright image is also illegal.

The question is whether it is legal.

It is not legal. The photographer holds the copyright to the photo. You must either purchase prints through the photographer or the photographer must release the rights to the photo to you, usually for a fee, if they will at all.

This is how he makes his living (or her) and it is also a means for the school to raise funds.

I think it would be legal to remove it, but NOT legal to make a copy of the photo after removing it, if that's what you're intending.
