so on the first day god created heaven (not the heavens), and earth, right? then he said let there be light from the darkness. and he divided the light from darkness. he called the light day and the darkness night. this was the first day. ok, so my question here is, for those who believe the term day is symbolic and could actually mean a much longer length of time, doesn't this specifically define a day? and then it wasn't until the fourth day that that god created the heavens, including the sun and the moon. however, i'd like to believe that every sensible individual realizes we get our light from the sun. and that the moon is not a light at all. it's only reflecting the light from the sun. so, how could he have created light on the first day without creating the sun on the first day as well?

farm bred... is my thinking so flawed that i question something so unlikely as what i have, while you don't question why and all powerful being who can do anything, would need to take days to create the universe, when he could just snap his fingers (assuming he has fingers). and then to apply some sort of humanlike charachteristic for god, they (those who wrote the bible) decided he needed a day for resting. if he's all powerful, why would he need to rest?

cheryl, then why create light if he is light. and if he is light and he's omnipresent, then would there ever be darkness. shouldn't god have said let there be darkness?

bear in mind i'm making the effort to read the bible. sadly, this is not a good start for those who say this is unquestionably the word of god.

I think that what you say is possible, though I am careful not to depend on the idea that what we see today is what it was like before. I think that covers a lot of things, from carbon dating, or whatever dating that we have to date old things with, to the planets speed as far as rotation goes.

If Velikovsky was right, the moon might not have even been there to begin with. And all those ancient calendars and the Egyptian clock that was later moved to Rome would reflect that, giving evidence that there used to be 360 day years.

One thing that came to mind while I read what you were saying is; I wonder if you took the time to use a Biblical Hebrew dictionary, or a concordance?

If you do you will find that there are other meanings for the words we see in the Bible to allow a different translation than the traditional one's. I find that they can be most helpful in determining the secrets that the Bible holds from those who aren't looking.

Hi, guess what: you are absolutely right.
The original manuscripts of the Bible are quite clear that God specifically mentions that the evening and morning are the first day, so that people won't get tripped up on
this. It is true that a thousand years is as one day with God, so this was written so that we would be clear that in this case, God meant a twenty-four hour period of time. Hey, good for you!
This should really get you going:
The manuscripts also say that this event is not the first creation of the earth, but God rejuvinating the earth to make it ready for the habitation of flesh man.
The earth stood still for eons and eons between when it was used before, and the event that you read in Genesis.
Read Genesis 1:1, and tell me when God said he created the earth. He didn't. Just
"in the beginning". The Bible tells of three earth ages: one that was, one that is, and one that is to come. We are now in the second earth age.
If you hear someone saying the Bible states the earth is 6000 yrs old, you know you are speaking to someone who is Biblically illiterate as a grapefruit.
Have a great day...

Come on -- are an atheist biblical literalist? Have you ever heard of a parable? Through out of most of the history of the Church, Christians have understood that the Genesis story of creation is not intended to be a literal or scientific account of creation. Instead it is intended to tell theological truth about God's work to create all that exists. Scientifically, we all know that the Big Bang was the beginning of space and time. But who directed the Big Bang to happen?

So you are saying that God, who created the universe, cannot produce light without the benefit of the sun. That's a nice little box you have put God in. God could have produced light and never created the sun at all. After all He is GOD.

If you really want the true account of creation read the apcryphon of John. Just type it in your search engine and read it. Jesus reveals to John that the god of the old testament is satan and that Moses didn't have a clue.

no it is not symbolic. it really was made on a day. why doubt the God all-powerful? are you saying God cannot make light if there was no sun around?

You are wrong. The sun is not light. It is a burning star. it gives off light as it burns. If light were never created, you would not be able to see the sun.
