It means that you shouldn't be mean to people who are "below" you, because when you come back down, those people are ones you'll meet again. They'll be higher than you. And what goes up, must come down, as they say.

Don't try to make yourself bigger by making other people look smaller. Treat people with consideration and earn your way up the ladder by being respectful, courteous and polite. Good manners never go out of style and people will remember you in a much kinder way. Think about the differences between your best friend and the jerk at the office who kisses up to management and takes credit for your work.

If you are well off in life making steady progress or something similar .. be good to others, try and help them. I guess you've heard what goes around comes around. So in case if ever there is a downfall in your life these ppl might come along and just console you or maybe even help you. It's a lot when you get people on your side there for you.

I think it means that on your way to success or when ur on the road to success be nice to those around you and dont be an a**.... Because if for some reason u find ur self in a tight spot or if for some reason ur down on ur luck...those people who u were nice to(when sucessful) may help u ..
If u were nice to those who surrounded u on ur journey to sucess then on ur journey to failure, those people may help u get back on that road to riches or w/e

Jerald K, that quotation is one of the many facets of humility. As the saying goes, pride (haughtiness, unkindness, etc.) precedes a downfall. When one falls down, he will fall down to the same level of the people he once mistreated. Power and success can be blinding, and often leads us to treat lower level people unkindly.

The ORIGINAL intent was admonition to those climbing the corporate ladder to NOT do it by trampling over others. Don't climb up by destroying or harming your associates.
If you loose your position and are demoted, you will find yourself working among prior associates who will no longer wish to have you in their presence.
Today, if you are demoted, it is now common practice to not place you into a lesser position but to FIRE you from the company.
Problem avoided.

This brings to mind a school teacher I knew that gave a little boy a hard time and then twenty some odd years later the former 'little boy' beat the holy crap out of him .Point made.
