It is because Eve committed the original sin. She listened to the devil and as her punishment she was to have pain in childbirth, along with the rest of women. If you read, there is a punishment for Adam too, that now goes for all men as well, for going along with her.
Genesis 2:16-3:22
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die." 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." 19 So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; 22 and the rib which the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 And he said, "I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I ate." 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." 17 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return." 20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them. 22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever" --

This is a constant question, and here is the answer from the original texts:
God was talking to Eve, not to all the women in the world. Eve's childbearing pains would be more than normal because she was having twins. God said he would multiply her conception; He did. By 2, exactly:
This does not mean that because of Eve's sin, all women will now have pain in childbearing: to have a child by normal function of the body will produce some pain; thats a given; God was saying that Eve's would be more than usual because that would naturally happen, if you give birth to one child and then your labor continues and you have a second child. Thats all this
is saying. Nobody is ever being held accountable for another person's sin.
You pay for your own sin, and yours alone.

We women are fine with the way child birth goes. He knows that we can take it.
I would rather you to wear a T-shirt John 3:16 on it.

Perhaps this was an example of how life is going to be. How often do the things that parents do affect their children and their children's children? I think it is common (but not guaranteed) for abused children to be abusers themselves. Children of alcoholics are probably more susceptible to becoming alcoholics themselves. If a husband treats his wife well, his sons will likely learn form that and threat their wives well too. With that in mind read this Scripture.
"I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me"

Have you ever pushed out a 6-9 pound baby out of you?? Probably not, since you don't have the right equipment, but it hurts!! It would hurt no matter what. There is just no way that pushing something the size of a watermelon out of something the size of a lemon isn't going to hurt. Sorry bucko, but picking out this one scripture isn't going to make it less true, or prove to me that it hurts to have a baby because of something God said. I'm not help accountable for the sins of Eve, so that scripture doesn't matter to me as a reason why it hurts to have a baby.

Religious tales all began with the reality and then invented some inane "divine" reason for it. Women have pain with childbirth because muscles contract and bones move. If this didn't happen, women wouldn't be able to walk upright or carry babies to term. It's science, not superstition.

I think it was one of the old-fashioned obstetricians who wrote that one in as an excuse to start forcing women to deliver babies on their backs (i.e. pushing against gravity) like some sadistic anti-woman kick in the butt.
