My sister's dog does it the most; she will take a couple of pieces of food in her mouth and drop it on the living room floor, then eat it. I just watched my new puppy do it also so I was just curious to see if anyone had any idea why =)

the dog is doing this as a submissive behavior he is not the alpha dog and carry it away from the source to allow the alpha dog to have the bowl ( the alpha could be the owner) if you ever watch nature shows the pack will snatch some food and carry it away and allow the alpha of the pack to eat .

My dogs do this as well but I have noticed that they always come eat the food by me or my boyfriend. I think they just like to be around us all the time.

it could be that they feel comfortable enough to eat slow. in most cases when a dog eats all their food over a bowl it is that they are hungry or they are afraid they wont get all of it so they binge eat. a dog who has access to their food all day will typically snack through out the day because they have no fear that food wont be their when they get back. if you dog does this then you are a good owner because you have mad your dog comfortable enough to relax and enjoy his food.:)

My border collie/Aussie does that all the time but my German shepherd eats her food really fast. It's weird I'm not sure why they do that.

Animals use their whiskers to gauge the space around them and help orient them in dark places. It makes sense that they probably don't like the edges of the bowls messing with their whiskers.
