Schnurrb... is absolutely right. Some of the old rules (stiff leather, high ankle support, inflexible sole, etc.) do not apply.
Now, we want flexible soles, low ankle support (high ankle supports just transfer the shock to the knees), and structure that works WITH the foot.
The downside of this is that the shoe is not usually as durable- so a lot of hikers now buy lower cost shoes and just toss them after a season- a perfect solution for fast-growing boys!
New Balance offers a great trail shoe, but pretty much any good athletic shoe or sports sandal will work unless you are carrying big loads. For bigger loads, we want a shoe that gives your feet some cushioning and keeps your foot from flattening out so much.

There are lots of good brands out there. If you're going to buy them, get good ones, and be sure that they're well-broken-in before he goes on a hike. Also be sure that he knows how to take care of "hot spots" during a hike. The only thing more miserable than ill-fitting boots is ill-fitting boots on feet with blisters!!!
I suggest going to an outfitter's like REI or someone local to your area to get boots that fit the wearer. Good ones will NOT be cheap, but they can make all the difference in a good trip and an awful one!

You really don't need hiking boots to enjoy backpacking. All you need are running shoes, cross training shoes, or specialty hiking shoes. This page explains the benefits:

I've hiked all over the Sierra in just Teva sandals with no problems. After I just hiked 21 miles in one day, over talus, snow, hard trail, cross country, over boulders, through creeks, and summited an 11,500' peak while wearing Teva sandals who's going to tell me I need hiking boots?
Inov8 and New Balance make great trail shoes, although you might already have a pair of new-ish shoes in your closet that will do just fine:

Timberland are high-rated boots. I hate I did not
take care of the leather on the ones I got for Christmas.
