He's not expecting a tip, what he will appreciate is a little courtesy, tell him where the bathroom is. An offer of a soda/coffee/water is appreciated and can be a good ice breaker,

He may well be working for someone and not making the megga bucks that you'd expect based on what you're being charged. Then again he may be owner/operator, either way if you treat him respectfully he's more likely to to treat you fairly too.
If you feel he has done his best and has not taken advantage of you a tip might be appreciated by a worker but speaking as a tradesman I have refused more tips than I've accepted. Sometimes it feels good to help out some one when you can, plumbers are people too, they've got the same problems we all have. Some are good both as people and as tradesmen, some will be asswipes, find a good one stick with him, make him remember you "oh yeah, the lady who made me fresh coffee and offered a sandwich at lunch time, how's it going?"
BTW an owner/operator should not be tipped, ask him if he would leave extra business cards for referrals.

Chances are he'll know a decent electrician too, some day you'll need one.

If you want to reward a tradesman that's been working for you for a day or two then a $10 pressed into his hand and "get yourself a six pack on the way home", this is construction guys language for thanks a lot!

Tip Plumber

2016-11-08 06:13:23 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

I read some great answers here. I have been a plumber for over 15 years. I left my career as a nurse and now I earn 3 x s more. I own a small plumbing company and I can tell you that after 3 years of 12 to 14 hour days it is refreshing to have a customer offer a tip. If the plumber has any ethics at all he would thank you and decline the offer. Mostly because he just charged you $120.00 to clear a drain. The job probably took no more than 30 minutes. If he is self employed he charged to much. If he works for someone than the break down would be in thirds. 1/3 to employee 1/3 to business for advertisements tool maintenance etc. then 1/3 to the owner. As for the b.c. it is all a matter of self respect.

by tipping u make him momentarily happy. but by knowing his name, asking his mobile no, telling him his importance (problems you would face with the existing problem) you would increase his self esteem. do offer some coffee or cold drink and snacks and definitely appreciate the quality of job after the job is done. to end with don't treat him like a plumber. treat him like a service provider it works wonders.

no, generally speaking you do not tip people who come to do home repairs. if you want to do something nice for a plumber, electrician, etc. offer them a beverage, a slice of cake, or some cookies

I am sure he'd love it if you offered him some ice water, coffee, maybe even a cold beer towards the end of a job well done. He would prefer your referral to others who might need his services, as well. It's nice of you to think so generously.

No, don't tip a skilled laborer. They charge based on their skill.
