My family owns a small farm on Martha's Vineyard and just recently we got some sheep and we wanted to look into getting a Border Collie. We want a male that about 1 or 2 years old and is trained for "herding" type work. Does anyone know of any rescues or places that are ideal for what we are looking for? Thanks!

I would contact new England Border Collie Rescue> http://www.nebcr.org/
and ask what may be available. I found a border collie listed in petfinder.com who was 3 years old, and had WON the regional herding competition. The trainer was ready for a new trainee, so put her up for adoption. I couldn't belive it! So, you might just be so lucky as to find one like that.

You can go onto the AKC's website and find the rescue contact info for Border Collies. Or do a search for "Border Collie Rescue." They may not have a dog that has already been trained for this work but who has a strong instinct for it. This is one breed that still has a strong drive for what its original job was, so many that are adopted as pets are just overwhelming to their families and then given up.

A dog that someone trained to do herding work isn't likely to be in rescue. You should contact a breeder who breeds specifically for, and works their dogs in herding. They'll be able to set you up with a good dog.

Try Petfinder.Org. You can enter the breed of dog you're looking for, whether you want a male or female, and whether you want a puppy, young adult, or older dog. You can also enter your zip code and it will show you the closest matches for dogs available from shelters. The results also display icons to warn you if a dog is not good with children, cats, or other dogs.

Not that many framers abuse their dogs, so chances are, they don't need to be rescued that often. you'll probably end up having to contact a breeder who specializebreeding herding collies

Border collies have way too much energy and if you do not expell that energy through they will act out.
