You have to either brush your cat all the time to get any stray hair but even that doesnt always work so a lot of cat owners actually shave their cats hair in the summer to help with knots and heat.

I have a great big cat with lots of long fur, and I use the Furminator shedding brush. It pulls out a lot of the undercoat, which is probably what you're going to see the most of. That's the thick, softer hair on a cat and they have three undercoat hair for every regular or "guard" hair. It's a nice brush because it has little blades between the teeth of the brush that actually cut the hair as it brushes.

To brush a cat properly, you'll want to brush it out really well, wash it with shedding shampoo, and then brush it again once it's dry. But most cats won't like the water (mine doesn't!) so I just brush it well well once a week.

The best way to keep your cat from shedding alot requires time and dedication. As a long-haired cat owner, trust that it is quite annoying at times to brush him, but brush you must. At least 3 times a week, preferably every day. I have also found a vitamin spray for his food that has helped with his shedding.

Sometimes when there is not enough fat in the cats diet the skin becomes dry causing excessive shedding and you may even notice dandruff. It could also become dry during the winter months when we have heat on in our homes. Look for foods containing Omega III oils or you could add a few drops of olive oil to her food.

Brushing your cat for a few minutes every day helps to minimize it as well.

Why are you asking dog people?
You can't stop the shedding, cats naturally shed their thicker winter coat in the spring.
But you can keep it under control and prevent hairballs in your cat's stomach by brushing it frequently.

They hate them, but....baths. With special soap made just for cats. Go to a pet supply store and they will mot likely carry it. I had this beautiful long haired cat, that lives with my mother now and she shed all over the place. I gave her a bath every so often and this didn't stop it, but it slowed it down. Warm weather also adds to the shedding of cats.

Daily brushing & good quality food.

Other than that, accept that your cat is going to shed.

You can't. Cat's shed no matter what you do... I've shaved my cat, cuz she had really long hair, and she still shed.

Brush it. That removes any loose hairs. The more hairs in the brush, the less on the couch.
