I reside in NYC and I'm looking for a store I can buy a black or dark wood chest/dresser for under $100. I would consider purchasing something and staining or painting it myself though it would be better if it was already the desired color. I'll also consider ordering online if there isn't a place around here to buy one from though I don't really want to pay for shipping. I've looked at Ikea, Target, Kmart and Walmart but they don't have anything under $100.

Try hitting the thrift stores. Most sell dressers under $30. Add in $10 for paint and you'll have a great piece well within your budget.

I think your best bet is to purchase a naked (unfinished wood) dresser and finish it yourself.
