The Shi'ite Muslims have the Mahdi, ancient Hebrews awaited the Meshach (Messiah), today's Dispensationalist Christians have the Rapture and Christ's kingdom, the Cargo Cult Polynesians await the return of airplanes bringing them gifts. What other religions hold to the expectation that some powerful personage from afar will come to them with gifts?

There is no consensus among researchers as to the best methodology for determining the religiosity profile of the world's population. A number of fundamental aspects are unresolved:

Whether to count "historically predominant religious culture[s]"
Whether to count only those who actively "practice" a particular religion
Whether to count based on a concept of "adherence"
Whether to count only those who expressly self-identify with a particular denomination
Whether to count only adults, or to include children as well.
Whether to rely only on official government-provided statistics
Whether to use multiple sources and ranges or single "best source(s)"

All religions are guides to transformation or transcendence. Whether Mahdi, Messiah, Second Coming of Christ, whatever - the word refers to the true Self within each of us. Achieving that state of full consciousness brings heaven with it. Cause and effect are never separated.

Most religions have some sort of redemption, either by a savior of going to a better place

I believe that's because religions are started by people under some sort of oppression that looks like it has no end and they are looking for a way out.
