We are trying to sell our home, and I truly believe that the color of my carpet is back in style. The husband wants to spend the $$$ and replace it with a safe neutral. Either way, someone may hate it. I just want to know what's IN and what's OUT.

I find it interesting that people think the color of the carpet will sell their house. It doesn't. Bad carpet might make people think twice, but you'll usually get that feedback from the realtors after a few showings. If your carpet is ugly and hideous, or if it stinks (literally) or looks really dated, then sure, remove it. But if it's good carpeting the worst you have to do if the house doesn't move is to give a $500 carpeting allowance to potential buyers and they can decide if they want new carpeting...or hardwood...or cork...or laminate...whatever.

The real truth is that most people tear out carpeting, even brand new carpeting, if it makes the room look boring or doesn't fit their personality. The only thing that would make your home more sellable right now would be putting in hardwood floors...and that's not necessarily a good step to take unless you live in a very depressed real estate market where houses are routinely spending more than 6 months on the market. If you can live with the carpet and make your house look really nice without replacing it, don't go to that expense.

Neutrals are always in and safe. Your realtor should help you with the staging of your home and the carpet color issue should be addressed then. Most buyers would replace carpet anyway due to age or furniture indentation marks that never come back. If your realtor hasn't mentioned your carpet then you may as well let the new buyer decide what they want.

Having done a few carpets for renovation, you can never go wrong with a beige or cream color, It seems that is the most common colors Ive put down.I would say dark brown, olive green, and orange are out.Go with carpeting, you don't need hardwood floors or anything like that. its really is expensive and not worth it if you are moving.
