Prestige, as a qualified submariner you are a member of one of the most elite forces in the world (very few can handle subs) and the undisputed, best sub-force in the world.. Extra pay, not that much but it's something. Lack of distractions and an excellent time for studying. You get to grow facial hair (don't tell anyone).

It's a world apart from the surface world, much higher quantity of competent people. Fewer prissy officers.... and many more.

No chance of getting a sunburn.

Gets you away from a lot of petty distractions of everyday life and COULD provide time to advance your education.

Most do it to bunk close to other soldier boys. They never get over the grabass of the high school locker room. Latent gaiety, I call it.
