I lost my mobile phone but need a crime referance number to claim on insurance. I went to my nearest Police station 1 mile away, but becasue of where I live i'm in a different county and have to go to my apparantly local Police station which is 25 mile away and for someone who doesn't drive its quite a hassel.

Could I give a statement over the phone to get the number?

I doubt whether you will get a crime reference number at all I'm afraid. If you've lost your phone then no crime has occurred, you will therefore not get a crime number. You may however get a lost property number. Also, where I work and in a lot of other areas, the Police no longer investigate mobile phone thefts unless they are related to a robbery. This is due to the large number of fools who think it's a good idea to report a phone stolen just so they can claim on their insurance for a new one because they want an upgrade. This obviously spoils it for the rest of the honest folk. I'm not trying to suggest that you are doing the same but you may not get a crime reference number if it's been stolen for this reason.

You can however, try and see what your local Police say.

As for giving a statement over the phone, you can do this but you will need to then sign whatever is written if you agree with it's content.

Yes you can get a crime reference number over the phone. If you phone your police enquires number they should put you through to the relevant police station or person. You can find this in your phone book or by phoning 118 or director enquiries. After you have given details of what happened they will supply you with the reference number. However I would advice you to do this quickly as many mobile phone company insurance policies will only cover your phone for the first 24hrs after it is lost or stolen. After 24hrs they may refuse to replace to it. Good luck!

oh yezzzz....ring your local police(not 999 please)and ask to be put through to your local area's help desk, they will take details and give you a crime number for your insurers(if phone was stolen)if it wasnt stolen but lost they will give you a lost property reference number which takes the place of the crime number for your insurer(note some local police policys regarding reporting may be in force in your area)but this applys for most of the uk.....dont ring churchill
yes you were fobbed off they should have taken details and transferred them to to the police area where it occured

You have been fobbed off. The police anywhere can take a report of a crime that happened anywhere and then they send it to the station who would deal with it, its called a transfer crime, the chances are they desk officer wheer you went to simply couldn't be bothered.

Log on to your local police web site, you should be able to report it online

Dial 110 That's the police number in China. But they only investigate the case if the value exceeds 2000 RMB No matter what if you're in trouble you can call 110. They will get to you pretty fast if you need.

Ring your local police station (tel no will be in the phone book) and ask for the Crime Management Unit. Tell them your name, date and place of incident and they will give you your crime ref no. If they haven't generated one yet, then ask for the CAD number.

Call the correct agency and find out. We don't even know where you live, how could we possibly answer the question.... Some police departments take reports over the phone, others do not.

Yes this is in fact the usual way of getting one ring any number for your local force and the call will go to a call centre where either they will crime it or pass you to the crime desk.

There is no way you are going to find out until you call the police department in question...All police agencies do NOT handle cases the same way...GIVE THEM A CALL.....If you live fairly close to where their jurisdiction ends see if they can meet you there if they wont take it over the phone.
