Humans are not stupid. There has been documented scientific study that proves that humans are hard wired in their brains for belief in a higher power of some kind.
The scientists did brain scans of several religious people while they were at prayer. A part of their brain lit up on the scan that is not stimulated by any other brain activity.
The western culture is really the only culture that requires logical proof of religion. The ancient Greeks were the first group of people that tried to find an absolute Truth through philosophy. Our culture has taken that pursuit of Truth to the ultimate level of being able to logically disprove just about anything.
I am religious because there is a peace in my life that I have now that was not there when I lived a sinful life and tried to take on the world by myself.

The bible tells us "it is by grace we are save through faith and not that of ourselves". You gotta have some faith, and what do you base that faith on? the scriptures. We are told faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Two things that I find very convincing that what the Bible says is true. One, Christ came and fulfilled many of the prophecies of the old testament. There have been hundreds of prophecies fulfilled which were prophesied hundreds of years earlier. This can not be by chance, God's hand is in it. Two , when Christ came He walked the earth and was not only recorded in the bible but also recorded by the Roman historians and by the Jewish historian Josephus. Christ died was buried and rose again 3 days later. He walked the earth for another 40 days and was seen by over 500 along with His disciples. The fact alone that He rose from the dead is evidence that He was different than any other. So I can now believe all what He said and trust in Him. He is "Truth". He said "I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no man comes to the father except by me".

We can prove religion, we just can't "prove" which one is the right one. Religion is , any system of faith and worship. Archaeologists have excavated a number of sites that show evidence of ritual activity in western Europe as early as 600 BC. so we've (Homo sapiens) been on a journey through different systems of beliefs as a way of creating meaning and expression. I dont think we are stupid, I think we just want to beleive in something that makes us feel good.

Humans like to believe there is a more powerful thing than us, when the only thing that is more powerful is nature. There is no proof, life would be complicated without religions though, there would be no morals or something from stopping us from doing bad things. As ridiculous as people are by believing in something so stupid, there is more thought to it than god or whatever. Until then we can all be atheists and not worry about going into a crazy world...or crazier than it is now.

there's nothing wrong with being religious. it doesn't show stupidity, it just shows that many humans have a nature to believe in something higher than themselves. the stupidity comes in when these same people won't look at life realistically and dismiss anything, even concrete evidence of anything that contradicts what their religion teaches.
certainly not every religious person does this, but there are far too many who do.

Not so much stupid (though don't get me wrong, a lot of people are) as desperate for answers, and afraid of the uncertainty inherent in being human. It's always been kind of mind blowing, to me, that millions of different people claim to sense millions of different things with faith, and even realizing that, so many of them are so certain that what they've sensed is right, and everyone else is crazy.
Steve, TG – Maybe not, but there’s plenty of evidence supporting the big bang and evolution.
Morganie – So you’re upset with this atheist for generalizing about religious people, but you have no problem generalizing about atheists, based on what he’s said? And as far as christianity, the small-mindedness, suppression, and blind loyalty it promotes is hardly something I would call a great hope for mankind.

It's not stupidity. It's hardwiring. Think about it. Who is God but an extension of Mommy and Daddy?
But it gets really fun when you can look at the universe and realize that there really IS such a Person. What are the odds of THAT? Of course, since God loves to twiddle with the odds, I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that He should also set us up in this fashion. Hey, He loves us! And He wants us to recognize Him. But before we can recognize, we kinda have to be able to SEE, don't we?

Religious beliefs have been passed down since the beginning of mankind worshipping the Sun.
It's not stupid if that's what a person believes.

This is a good question for 2 reasons.
1) It displays the attitude most atheists have towards theists: they must be stupid to believe what they do. All I can say is that this is the height of arrogance and very rude.
2) It opens the door for more respectful questions on comparing the various evidences for the world's faiths. I can tell you that after researching various religions: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity etc. Christianity is a more plausable and consistent religion that offers a greater hope for mankind.
