Seems like they twist the bible around so much and have such an "exclusive" air about them it's hard to describe them as christians.

Just like any other Christian church, some members are, and some aren't. Christianity is a personal decision that has precious little to do with what church you attend.

Yes, they are really Christians.

You might have run into a Southern Baptist church that is in a rut. Baptists believe that Jesus Christ died for the world. They also believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. If you read The Purpose Driven Life and The Purpose Driven Church by Rick Warren, you can see the way a true Southern Baptist believes. Rick Warren is the Southern Baptist pastor of the fastest growing church in the country.

I am a Methodist, so I am not biased toward Baptists.

You really generalize when you ask are Southern Baptists Christians. I have been a Southern Baptist, a lot longer than I have been a Christian. You could just have easily asked, if Catholics are Christian, or if Methodists are Christian. In Every denomination there are members, some of which I am sure, are not Christians. The one thing we all have in common is Jesus Christ, beyond Him, your guess is as good as any.

I know it does sometimes seem that way, when we see the way certain denominations are reflected in the media. Actually, as hard as those of us who consider ourselves Christians might try, we all fall short, no matter what denomination. Anyone who thinks they're a perfect Christian is sadly mistaken, but anyone who judges whether another person is "Christian enough" is also on the wrong track if they seek to draw closer to God, so it's probably best if we just don't presume to know what is in the hearts of others.

Besides the Amish, Mennonite, Presbyterian, and Independent Baptist, I would think that Southern Baptist are about as straight as you can get. If you are at odds with that denomination- you may need to have a spiritual check-up, cause you are probably wrong.
Are you talking about an individual or the denomination?

They are as Christian as any Protestants. Which means they teach a mixture of remnants of original Christianity and new traditions introduced by their human founders, while following their own unauthoritative interpretations of the Bible.

To daljack, not everyone who believes in Jesus Christ is a Christian. Mormons believe in Jesus Christ but are not Christians. They do not believe Jesus is the Son of God, very God. They believe he is the brother of Satan.

Belief in the atonement for one personally defines who is and who is not a Christian. If one believes that Christ died for them personally, then they are Christian. All humans are fallible and the interpretation of scripture is fallible as witnessed by those who practice works-based religions while claiming to be Christian.

Anybody who believe in Jesus Christ is a Christian.

Jews, Muslims, Atheists and a few others don't believe in Jesus so they're not Christians.
