All military members buy their uniforms while in boot camp. In the Navy it is about $1100 for females and $850 for males. The pay is taken directly out of your pay before you see it. Also each year you receive money in your anniversary month of coming into the Navy to replace worn out uniforms and boots so over your enlistment you do get that money back, but you will need to replace worn out uniforms and buy added uniform items like ribbons and medals and paygrade items like each time you get advanced to the next paygrade you need to update all of your uniforms with that paygrades patch or collar device. It isn't a big deal because most people earn more in boot camp than they ever have prior to that date in their life. Be careful though...if you don't see a deduction in your pay for the uniforms you didn't get them for free. I went to boot camp June 29th thru August 29th. That is the highest volumn time of year for the Navy and they got back logged on the pay deduction. My deduction was taken out the last day of September before the new fiscal year started so the books would be straight for the Navy Exchange, the entity that issues you your uniforms. Pretty shocking to get a zero dollar paycheck when you get used to getting paid on the 1st and the 15th like clockwork. Uniforms are the way to go though. Way cheaper than your business attire for your civilian counterparts.

You do not actually pay for your uniforms. You are provided and initial issue of uniforms at Basic Training. It does not come out our your paycheck.
You will receive the equivalent of a W-2 stating you were paid the amount, equal to the cost of your uniforms.
Then you will start receiving an annual allowance after two years of service.

While in "Boot camp", dungarees will be issued to you untailored. But in days, you will be receiving your issues back all tailored and no , you will not be charged cash for your uniforms (it will be coming out of your military pay). Once you graduate and head to your designated "A" school or head to the fleet, then you will be paying for uniforms.

Is has been about 15 years since I went to boot camp, but I remember it being around $250. Don't worry, you don't need to carry that much cash on you - it will come out of your first pay check!

I believe someone gave you some bad information. Your uniforms will be provided and after you complete 2 years of service you should receive an annual clothing allowance to replace worn uniforms
