A salvage title is going to reduce the value of a vehicle by about 1/2 or more. Once it's fixed and retitled as "Rebuilt" you will regain some of the value.

It all depends on what vehicle and how bad and what type of damage was done. I bought a 89 Cadillac De ville with 82000 miles on it that was totaled because the front grill, passenger side fender and hood was damaged. An easy fix and I've got a very smooth riding car that only set me back 2000 bucks.

Yes. Also, some insurance companies won't insure salvage vehicles. Check with your insurance provider before you buy. Personally, I wouldn't touch a salvage even if it was a free gift.

Would you want ot buy a car that you know was a total diaster at one time?

Sure, it will reduce the value. How much may depend on the rarity of the car and how desireable they are.
