MY JEEP IS AN AUTO, IT WILL ONLY DRIVE WHEN IN 4X4 MODE. When 2 wheel drive is selected the vehicle is stationary, almost as if its in neutral. What i would like to know is, is the standard cherokee 4.0 gearbox the same and will it fit.

Thankyou

I assume your Grand Cherokee is equipped with SelecTrac, as opposed to QuadraTrac. If that is the case, SOME transfer cases from Cherokees will fit. Your transfer case is model 242. You will have to check around a bit.

This Jeep probably has the 318 V8 (8th digit of VIN is a Y), it's OK that there is a new motor in this Jeep, but when you drive pay attention to both the rear and front ends for noise. Jeeps have Dana axles and they are famous for being noisy and needing to be rebuilt. Just turn the radio down and listen while driving, it should be quiet. If you hear a roaring noise, look at another car...quick!!

The XJ used the AW4 trans, the WY used a Chrysler trans. I have not heard of anyone trying to swap transfer cases between the 2, so I am not sure if it will work.

This is not a gearbox (a.k.a transmission) problem - it's the transfer case.

You have to change the Transfer case fluid
