JACK RUSSELL!!! I have one and He loves to go after things with fur or feathers. He hasn't killed anything but I'm sure if I didn't catch him in time he would. But he is a very loving dog who is very protective of his owner...then again he barks and runs away when new people come to the house.

ANY terrier is a great idea for pest control. The word 'terrier' come the Latin word terra, meaning earth. Dacshunds, Corgis, and a rare breed known as the Swedish Vallhund (A relative and most likely the ansester of both Welsh Corgis) are all recomended as well. Even the Yorkshire Terrier and other "toy" terriers are good at ratting (hunting rats and mice). Just no rat poison and keep the dog current on vaccinations. Rat poison is the same reason for the pet food recall by Menu Foods for both dog and cats. It's been killing pets like crazy. What a mess!

Most Terriers would work. My Whippets have killed amazing amounts of mice and rats. But Whippets are Sighthounds and very different than Terriers.
But I never let them eat the prey. Live traps , sticky traps or an exterminator is a better option. Plus go through the house and eliminate food sources or you'll just get them back again.
Not all dogs will hunt. Your dog can get sick from the mice. So don't get a dog, just because you have mice. Not a good reason IMHO

I have a GSD who is super fast and loves to catch mice- He chews them up like bubble gum, yummy little mousy snacks. Because of this I have him de-wormed more frequently just in case. More commonly used is the Jack Russel and Rat Terrier. Look for "working" line not "show" line dogs and you'll probably get a better hunter.

jack russell terrier all the way! JUST MAKE SURE TO GET THE RABIES SHOTS ...JUST IN CASE THE MICE HAVE RABIES!!! ....my dog is 8monthes and she is small 12lbs so she is perfect size and she is the coolest dog ever sweet sometimes sassy sometimes but smart obediant and just your well rounded awesome dog ...this one guy ( at the dog park ) got mad because my dog was chasing his dogs around (that's what dogs do it's like a pack thing) and they were like seriously really tiny ...lil smaller then a guinea pig with 2in legs ...i think she thought they were rats...but she wasn't biting them ( that guy was so uptight it was a dog park) so ya the only frustrating part (sometimes -just every once in a while) you can't go in the little dog park because they make trouble (or you have uptight owners who don't understand jrt's) and then you can't go in the big section because the jrt will get hurt because she won't back down to a fight ( shes a big dog in a little dog's body) but ya they are awesome dogs ...good luck with them ...hope this helps
for a pic of my jrt (and lab) got to http://freetobeme11.blogspot.com the jrt is a female ...but i think she was the runt of the litter but a still very beautiful dog
and i just wanted to let zeeyba know that he knows nothing about dogs and has probably never seen a jrt in his life

Nope, but you can check the phone book and find a guy who will come in and get rid of the mice. Or set some traps, it's not hard to get rid of mice. Buying a dog just to get rid of mice is a silly idea.

We had a silky terrier who used to kill mice and gophers. Any terrier should be able to do the job. But make sure there is no mouse poison around your house, because if your dog kills a mouse that has eaten poison... well, you see where I'm going with this ;)

A dog used for hunting vermin will be inconsistent at best, and could end up contracting rabies from his prey, as well as encephalitis, which dogs are prone to.
A cat will be a much better choice. Cats have FAR stronger hunting skills and instincts than dogs, and are less prone to rabies and viruses that the vermin carry.
