Once you've mastered the technique of clipping in and out without falling down, riding clip-in pedals is actually easier. You can spin the pedals faster, and you use the hamstrings to pull the pedals up as well as the normal pushing motion. Essentially, you're using your entire leg to spin the pedals, so each muscle group is doing less work. Therefore, you can go faster for a longer period, or it's easier to go the same speed as _without_ clip-in pedals.

Try it, you'll like it!

I am not sure by exactly what you mean by harder. When you are clipped in your goal is to have a complete pedal stroke. When you pull up you will use different muscles then when you are are just pushing down on the pedals so you may have some soreness for a time. When you master the technique you will have more power from the shoes & the cadence. Try to have an even spin all the way around & remember to unclip when you stop!

Only harder while getting used to clipping into them as you get going and remembering to come out of them when stopping. The "feel" will be harder because there is no flexing in the shoe like there was in your sneaker, meaning more of you effort is put to moving the bike forward, less wasted energy. You'll also be able to pull as well as push on pedals, therefore getting more power into the bike.

It will be harder to get used to clipping and unclipping on the first rides, but after that, you have better control of the bike on downhills and, if you have a smooth pedal stroke, will also help on climbs.

Hi,
As already stated, the hard part is getting used to pulling up as well as pushing down, plus the process of clicking in and out. Other than that, I don't think I experienced anything extra.

I like what Greg LeMond said: "it never gets any easier... you just go faster"
