The God who owns this planet exercises sovreign authority over it. Part of God's "nature" is that He is a God of Judgment. It is in His nature and character, He can not change that. So when He sees sin in the earth He jugdes it. So cleansing and punishment will come out of His judgement of sin. God can either judge favorably or against. Also, whatever comes into His Presence is judged. That's why if a man is faithful and seeks God and comes into His Presence. That man will be judged to recieve the reward a faithful man should recieve. And it is vice versa for one who rejects God.

Actually, not to sound heretical, but it's interesting to note that judgement is performed by Christ. And "Christ" wasn't Jesus' last name but his function - the "savior". And this had to be explained to the people of the time within the framework of their existing beliefs, and so the idea of Jesus actually judging each person became accepted.
I would suggest that we all existed before we were born into a physical body, and we'll exist after we leave these bodies. At that point, "Judgement" will be an assesment of our life, where we get to see it from another perspective and actually understand the events of our lives from a spiritual viewpoint. The "Christ" within each of us will be the spiritual advisor per se that allows us to experience this.
That is what I believe is meant by judgement. For most of us, I believe that in this review we will see that we are not yet perfectly transformed into the image of God and that we have more work to do. I don't know if these means reincarnation or more spiritual growth in "Heaven", but eventually when we truly find the "narrow road" we will have been transformed via the Holy Spirit into the image of Christ.

Why do we have judges in the courts? People commit crimes, and other people are suspected or accused of committing those crimes. Judges determine who is guilty and assign a just punishment to those who are proven guilty. In our society it is put upon us to determine who is held accountable for a crime, but it is still the judge who determines what the just punishment for the crime should be. God has judged man to be guilty of sin (and believe me, it was no real stretch--we provided more than enough evidence of our guilt). While God, in His love, would LIKE to excuse us all, He cannot deny Justice and must pass sentence on us. That sentence is death, and He provided, through His Son, a Just way to forgive us of our crime. That's the only way out, and if you don't accept that way, you accept the sentence He has pronounced and will have to pay it.

We are all held accountable for what we think, say and do. Final judgment will take place and we will take responsibility for what we have done.
Peace be with you and Happy Resurrection Day!

To be found Worthy of entering into the next life.
But I have surpassed this, I seek to make my Father proud of me, not for doing as he has commanded me, but because I love him and he is in my heart. I would not do anything that would make him be ashamed of me. This I ask of him, in the name of Jesus, I ask.
