As opposed to using a purely one-phase system, why do we use primarily three-phase systems throughout the world? Also, why not use more than three phases?

I ask this since I am a TA for a power systems/energy conversion laboratory course, and I want to give my students a good list. I have several reasons already, but I want to make sure I haven't missed anything.

So, list away! And thanks in advance for the help.

you use three wire to deliver power if you use a single phase power system either you are going to use a large conductor to carry the same load which affect the span of the towers or a three circuit each one of them consists of two wires so by using three phase system you reduce the necessary conductors and also you improve the voltage quality as the voltage drop for a 3 phase system is reduced by the fact that no return current or a very small one in case of a neutral conductor is used.

they found that the 3 phase system is not complicated in calculation or evaluation you can imagine the phase diagram for a system consists of more than 3 phase.

its more economical for generator to operate if they are 3 phase generators not more or less, you can see that there are not single phase generator rated above 400KVA because a 3 phase generator is more economic.

these are that come in mind ,hope I helped

quick review
- reduce conductors cost
- increase spans of towers - if overhead lines are used
- improve voltage drop
- large 3 phase generators are more economical than single
phase ones
- make calculations and evaluations easier

The main advantage of a three-phase power system is a more balanced electrical load. This type of system uses three voltage sources to supply the same load.

Another advantage of a three-phase system is that it supplies continuous power. This helps three-phase motors run better than one-phase or two-phase motors. This type of power system is also helpful for large data centers, manufacturing companies and other industrial applications. For example, using one three-phase system eliminates the need to install multiple single-phase systems in a data center, reducing cabling and installation costs. Reducing the amount of equipment needed to operate the data center also reduces cooling costs and saves energy.

Three phase can be converted to DC without the need for extensive filtering capacitors. The ripple frequency is higher and the rectified voltage does not drop to zero on each cycle. Most high power radio/television broadcast transmitters require 3 phase power for its high voltage DC section. They also use 3 phase motors for the cooling blowers to maximize efficiency.

More phases can be generated and transmitted but do not offer much advantage considering the complexity and wires involved.

The three phase power system is better because:
1)A three phase power system is better as it can deliver more power at less voltage with smaller-gage conductors than single- or split-phase systems.
2)All three wires carry the same current and have a constantly balanced power load

that's as a rule about the turbines and vehicles fairly than the distribution gadget, because multiphase vehicles run smoother and are smaller, so more affordable. for this reason unmarried area vehicles are not likely in sizes more advantageous than 5 HP. There would properly be a lot less conductor fabric in 3 area distribution platforms so long because the load is linear and quite balanced. it really is because the currents are shared, and they could in part cancel. The link less than has more advantageous information.

Three phase is nice because peak power equals average power. There is no instantaneous peak like they is in single phase.
