My father is a life long atheist. When I was an adult I took on christianity for a decade. My father was very dissapointed with me for a while. That made me very sad. You see, when you are young, you think you know better than your parents, when my father was right all along.

I'm not an atheist, my mom is though and when I told her I was Christian back in middle school she about had a fit and then when I became agnostic about 5 years ago, she felt much better about how she brought me up.

I'm an Agnostic, not an Atheist, but I'll answer your question anyway. :)
Luckily, my mother is a very open minded person and wasn't a strong Christian to begin with, so she said something like "Well, I'm glad you've found something that makes you happy, but for both our sakes, do NOT tell your grandmother!"

Mom: "Yea, I'm still an agnostic. It's hard to see how people could be so gullible isn't it?"
Dad: "Yea, I became an atheist about 10 years ago too."
So, for me, it wasn't too hard.

my mom respected it.
my dad just gives me a weak pass at pascal's wager. I actually think he's pretty atheistic himself....hasn't been to church in years, yet it's like "what if you're wrong and god hears you?"
it's rather comical.

In my country atheism is the norm. I'd get some harsh words if I said I was becoming a Christian.

My mother didn't seem bothered by it at all. I don't talk to my father. My father never went to church, when we were young, so I don't know if he would care either.

Didn't bother them. They knew that I had both the smarts and the ambition to come to an informed conclusion.
