'Do not use my name to commit murders' instead of 'Do not take my name in vain'?
(i.e.-the Inquisition, the Crusades, witch hunts, etc.)

Re Sister S's answer: Those listed were not wars for lands.
To everyone: I am aware that most religions have murdered/killed b/c of their religion BUT nobody is telling me, or anyone, that Queztecoatl or Loki is going to send me to Hell for not buying their version of an 'all-mighty' deity who does absolutely NOTHING when killing and saying it's b/c so-and-so deity wants it that way!

It says "thou shalt not kill"
and "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vein."
The items you listed are in the past. I have no control of the past actions of others or the events they participated in.

Do not murder is included. However, humans will always war, even if they don't have God to use. Or did you think that the Vikings were just peaceful tradesmen? Nope, they went to war over lands and goods. So did the Muslims. So did the Celts. So did the Native Americans. So did the Mayans, the Incas, the Aztecs, the tribes of Africa. So don't sit there and think that humans are only violent towards each other because of God. They were blood-thirsty and abusing their own people from the begining of time.

Asalaamulikum,

very good question, I hope people would read their holy books more closly and with historical context. Oh yes, The Ten Commandments are only the start, from that you have like:Torah, Nevi'im, Ingil (Bible), Quran, Hadith. And seriously, only your prayers the primary reason for worshipping God, alone. But to do an act of Evil and such major sin, will only lead those people into the hell fire.

Salaamulikum
(peace be up on you)

All morality is included in the Ten Commandments, as Jesus illustrated when he said that hating your brother is equal to murder and lusting after a woman in your heart is equal to committing adultery.
Followers of the Yahweh aren't the only persons who have killed in the name of their religion. So don't go blaming Christians and Jews alone for this travesty.

The hearts of men are evil and can only be redeemed by the blood of Gods only son Jesus who He sent to die for our sins. Yes, God sent his son to be murdered by man for the specific purpose of saving our souls. I wouldn't question a God who is willing to do this to save even the least deserving of us. If you don't believe in God than the question is irrelivent. If you do than you know that Satan is in charge in this world right now and only those who know God are covered by his love, forgiven of their sins and protected from his wrath. Either way the answer is coming for the just and unjust the righteous and the unrighteous or "self righteous"....

The commandment to not take His name in vein covers that. Most people think it's when you say His name in a curse, but it's not the words that God knows, it's your heart.

Not to mention that if someone were to kill another person in the name of the one true living God (The Holy Spirit), it is considered blasphamy.

Just remember that God loves you and whatever others do or say are of this world, he has overcome the world and wants you to be in Heaven with Him.

does it really matter? they use god as a scape goat to kill. long ago people did fight for god because at that time the Israelites were god's chosen nation and so they fought to uphold his laws. but then they failed to up hold those laws as well and so god withdrew from that nation and no longer has them as a chosen nation. When Christ came to earth he made a new covenant and so now most god fearing people are not allowed to kill other people for god's sake. even Jesus himself said " if you kill by the sword you die by the sword" he said that right when they were about to arrest him and that's when Peter cut the ear off one of the guards. And he proved that so when they arrested him and killed him - he (Jesus) did not fight back or kill anyone. .

I think that taking His name in vain kind of covers all aspects of sin that could be committed in His name.

this is a passage that i found off of beliefnet.com---God asked us not to do both

And God spoke all these words, saying,
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
1---"You shall have no other gods before me.
2---"You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3---"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
4---"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.
5---"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
6---"You shall not kill.
7---"You shall not commit adultery.
8---"You shall not steal.
9---"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10--"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbor's."

same thing! those who kill unjustly in the name of God are taking His name in vain (vanity-emptiness). The inqusition, the Crussades are result from man's corruption of the Word. Yeshua taught us to lay down our lives to show others the Way, not kill them if they don't agree!
