I can't remember how to automatically trace an object in a picture, without manually following every detail around.

There is a way to have the program see what you are trying to trace, and help you guide along the lines.

Can anyone tell me hot to do this?

Hey, the only way I know how is to promote your background layer to a raster layer then use your magic wand with a tolerance of 0 to click onto the area/s you want to keep. You then do a selections - invert and hit delete. You'll have to enlarge it and go in and clean up stray pixels.
