I am 6'0" tall (72 inches) with a 77" armspan. Ali was 75 inches tall with an 80 inch reach. Lennox Lewis was 77" with an 84" reach, that's crazy. Arms are typically longer across than one is tall. Tyson's 1 inch is by no means strange.

You guys are idiots, Tyson was known for having a short reach but he was still successful because he was a beast. One or two inches of arm span longer than height is normal, but some exceptional fighters have more, as mentioned above.
And to answer the other guy s question, it is measured this way because finger tip to finger tip is a more reliable way to measure, that is, there s no definitive point on your armpit where you measure to, so span gives more accurate results. Also, the length from your fingertips to your armpit isn t the whole picture... someone could have very broad or wide shoulders for example and this would not get factored in if you didn t use SPAN.

I'm over 6' tall so I can relate. For the most part I actually like it. It's a problem when shopping for clothes and I did intimidate some men, but generally I like it. I was always into sports and it's usually a good thing to be tall then. I am married now too so it's not impossible to get married. I've had boyfriends who are taller and shorter than me. Just tell her she'll be glad when she doesn't have to get someone to reach stuff for her. :)

Err....
Reach means wingspan. As in the distance between the tips of your fingers on each hand when you stretch out like a cross.
If he had a 72" inch long *arm*, he'd be well over 10 feet tall.

I recall in 60's and most of 70's boxer arm length from shoulder to fist was the measure and called his"reach" I don't know why span came into use, nor why idiotic boxing officials decided to measure boxer's reach by span.
Span is a stupid way to measure boxers..

RE:
how can mike tyson have a 72" reach and be 5'11" tall?
how can he have a 6' reach, if he is only 5'11" tall, shouldn't his hands be dragging on the ground?

I would say the problem here is that you dont realise how a boxers reach is determined.
If you stretch out your arms sideways and then measure the length from fingertip to fingertip then that is your reach measurement, if you do it yourself you will see that the measurement wont be that far away from your height.
