What is stunning is we spend far more on the prison system then we spend on education which would mean fewer people in prison. Sometimes we don't make sense even to ourselves. .

No they will not be shocked; it's only going to get worse. I think 99% of the problem is it's a luxury and some look forward to coming back. I mean for 5 cents you get a meal, prices vary on room and board, but you get ac/ heat, tv ect...
We need more tent cities and common sense. Crazy it would cost someone a mere $250-$1000 to build a empty room yet the govenement takes bids of up to $100,000 per cell? People are doing this to themselves.
My comment on this if you do not like the jail conditions don't break the law!

I actually think they need to make the punishments worse than they are now. Maybe people would think twice before doing some of these crimes. You do the crime you do the time.
They need to take away ALL luxury's(TVs,exercise equipment, law libraries, free time, cigarettes etc.) from anyone in jail or prison. This is supposed to be a bad place that no one wants to go to.
If you have someone who is a repeat offender and refuses to learn from their past mistakes put them on death row to rid society of these parasites. 3 strikes and your on death row.
If someone is on death row give them 1 year max for an appeal then pull the switch. That would get rid of a lot of them.
If someone gets pulled over for DUI or DWI confiscate their car and sell it at public auction and put the money in a fund to help pay for the injuries of the innocent victims of those people.
Just my opinion.

probably not.
this will be recalled as a small detail, in an age of large details.
here's an example of how things can be forgotten...
when we hear of what happened in 1692 in salem massachusetts, we hear only of the notorious witch trials and rightly so, 20 innocent people were put to death in what can only be described as one of the grossest miscarriages of justice in the dark history of new england.
here's what you don't hear about:
the death penalty was handed down like it was nothing. offenses that are today misdemeanors like shoplifting and petty theft were routinely punished with hanging.
in 1692 in massachusetts, how many were put to death for petty theft and shoplifting - i would guess many times the number put to death for witchcraft.
in 1692 in massachusetts, how many were given 10 or 20 lashes (whipped) in public for crimes ranging from swearing to showing a little bit of leg (for the ladies) - many many times the number hanged as witches.
it's amazing what can be forgotten over time...

Stop it, your bleeding all over me. They are in jail because society demands protection. Those in jail for minor stuff are there because they didn't get the message.
If you want to break the law, society will deal with you.

THey would be more shocked at the culture that got us to this point. If your a liberal they would be outraged at the culture of imprisoning so many people.
On the other hand the conservatives would be shocked at the glorification in crime and greed that led people to crime.

It will take nearly going broke housing all of these people to get the message that is doesnt work, and when we do, and punishment is something that hurts, we will look back and see how stipid of a system we have.
