I guarantee you that man will NOT work for food. He wants you to give him money, not food. If you knew about homeless people you would know that. Food is available to the hungry in this nation thru churches, agencies, drop-in centers. He could go to any restaurant and offer to work for a sandwich. Someone would give him food.
If you want to help the hungry and homeless, find out where the local shelters are and direct them to it. And donate food and clothing, possible your time to the shelters who provide for them.
There is no need for there to be hungry and homeless in this nation. There is just too much help available if people would take advantage of it.
I would not give money to people on the street, usually. But I have and probably will again.
Sometimes I am scammed but I feel like sometimes I have been helpful.
I saw an old man looking thru the trash at an Arby's. He found a take out bag. There was nothing in it, but he rubbed the paper against his mouth taking in the smell. He did not ask those of us standing there for anything. He walked across the street and I ran after him and gave him money. He did have pain in his eyes.
You have to be discerning when giving away money. Some people are on the streets by choice, others by poor choices.

I love this question! And you know what I think a lot of us can't answer this question... People think they do the right thing at one time, just to look back and say why the heck did I just do that, why the heck did I just say that to that person. I myself as a person want to live a great life, and try to do the right thing all the time. But what would life be if we all did the right thing all the time? I myself yet don't know how to answer this question because you may say you're going to do something, the right thing, and then when the time comes, you do the exact opposite. So I think we all should live or lives with this question in mind, because I think if you really think about it, it could take us far in life. If we knew that's what the man was there to do, we would all help him. But since there's no certain, most people just go on, ignoring the man. Just because we know the person is important doesn't mean we should only help this ONE person...we need to help the less fortunate people to, just because the person isn't "important" or known to be very special, doesn't mean we shouldn't help them. Everyone's special and everyone needs help in life at one point in time.....

You're right! That homeless guy is an angel offering you an opportunity to give back to the universe. It is only a test in the fact that by "giving or not giving" are you being a good steward? You can choose to give with joy knowing that once you release the money, what he does with it is 'none of my business.' You can also choose to not give and consider yourself a good steward as you hold out for a better cause to give to.
The answer is in each individuals heart. The intention is what is important when you give to anything. When you do give, it is because it makes you feel better regardless of who is doing the receiving.
Even if the person receiving is a crook or an addict if I feel better when I give. Therefore I give for me , not for them. I do not give to all causes because I must also be a good steward of the money that god has entrusted me with. If you have pain and misery in your life you may need to ask the question "Where am I not giving in my life?"

Dude, that guy is not homeless, and the sign is a scam. He only wants your money, and will turn down both work and food. He is an independent business person making about $40/hour (tax free!) I wish I did as well as him, and didn't have a boss either.
He goes home to a warm house probably nicer than yours every night.
If you want to know how the real homeless live, or if you want to help them, go to your local homeless shelter, and volunteer.

I was on the way to a job site and saw a guy holding up a sign saying he'd work for food. Pulled over the truck and told him to jump in the back, that we would pay him cash to clean up the site for the day and feed him lunch. He told me that it "wasn't the kind of work he was looking for" and then asked if he could just have some money, so I left. If he was an angel, he was an extremely lazy angel.

The last homeless person I found in the street was a woman named Mary and her husband Andy. This was 25 years ago in Grand Junction, Colorado (I live in a small town-there are no homeless).
She was pregnant and had lived in the streets since she was 12. We were panhandling outside a convenience store when the Palisades police showed up. They took us to the local Salvation Army shelter for the night. Andy and Mary refused to stay because they weren't allowed to sleep together even though they were married.
As Mary walked away, I felt a pang of guilt. Here was this homeless pregnant kid (actually, she was 2 years older than me) who needed to eat right and she had no money for it. I called them back and gave them the $50 I had hidden in my shoe. Keep in mind, I was homeless too.

That Homeless Man makes more money than I do per day, he's bringing in $200 to $300 or so a day for sitting on his butt being a cheeky little beggar, I keep giving him money but he doesn't do anything but come back the next day begging for more. I have to work and earn my money and you should know that God helps those who help them selves.

We have hobos everywhere in NYC. Many of them crack addicts or too lazy to work. If he's willing to work, he would be finding a job. There are homeless shelters everywhere, there's no reason to beg for money. There's a good reason why we ignore them. In this country, as long as you're willing to work, you'll survive. Why do you think so many people immigrate here? Plenty of opportunities.

The poor will be with us always. We don't always know the circumstances behind the man with the sign. Usually I'll give some help of some sort when I can and I'm asked directly. But that doesn't make me any better than someone who'll ignore them completely.
