I don't know too many LDS who only come to church on Easter and Christmas. I think when someones inactive, they're inactive all the time.

The same reason that some Christians only go to church on Easter and Christmas.

I agree with Mr. Penguin on this. I think that for some people, church isn't a priority. I have several friends who I term inactive because they don't come to church (and haven't in years), don't have a calling, etc. Yet one will take her kids to church every week they want to go, drop them off, then pick them up later. Another hadn't been to church in over a year and half, yet was shocked that anyone would consider her inactive because she had a calling as the secretary in the Stake Presidency. The church considers you active if you have attended at least one meeting in the last month. Some people feel like if they still know the gospel to be true and they don't go around spewing anti-Mormon stuff, then they are active. Then when Easter and Christmas come around their hearts are pricked and they try to rededicate themselves to attending more regularly. Then the alarm goes off the next Sunday and they decide to attend what one friend calls "The Church of My Pillow."

Because they can. No one tells you that you HAVE to go to church. Most people go because they want to. I enjoy church, so I go every week I don't have a sick kid ;). But it isn't mandatory to go to church every week. It's better if you do, but not required. You can still be religious without church, but you miss out on some of the blessings, or things you could have learned by not being there.

Mr. Penguin, just so you know, for general conference, it isn't 8-10 hours each day. It's 4, spaced out as a 2 hour block in the morning and a 2 hour block in the afternoon. There is a total of 4 sessions, not counting priesthood session for the men and boys 12 and older. So it's less then sitting through all of church at one time. Just so you know!!

For the same reason that some Methodists only go to church on Christmas and Easter, or Lutherans, or Baptists, or whatever.

Probably because they grew up catholic, lol!

Seriously, though, it's probably because they want religion to "complement" their lives, and not "dictate" their lives. In the LDS Church, many kids grow up their whole lives going to Church every single Sunday for 3 hours (except Gen Conf weekends, then they get to watch Church for 8 to 10 hours on both Saturday AND Sunday) and just want a break.

Otherwise, maybe they would prefer to be completely inactive but prefer to attend those two weeks to make their families happy.

I suppose it's because they feel those are important days to go to church?
