Learn your chords!! #1 most important thing for beginners! Practice switching from one to another with a metronome. Learn the major chords first. After that, learn the 5 positions of the penatonic scale. This is used in all kinds of music and is pretty easy to play. Finally, play every day even if it's only for 10 minutes. This way you're constantly improving. Before you know it you'll be making fun of your friends that play toy guitars on Guitar Hero on Playstation while you're actually really rockin' out.

1. Buy a guitar chord book having basic music theory.
2. Learn by heart all the chords possible, but especially which chords fit in each key signature.
3. Learn how to read music notation first, tablature second.
4. If possible, secure an instructor or good friend that can show you what mistakes to avoid while learning.
5. Watch others perform.
6. Take care of your instrument.
7. Play every day for the first two years, then every day afterward.
8. When you feel like playing, play with feeling.
