When you get on a bike, you do take the risk of interacting with cars. It's an unfortunate fact. However, you'll be glad to hear that 99.9% of drivers are rather courteous. You only remember the .1% that isn't and it only takes one to ruin a ride. There are some things to remember when you ride. First of all, remember that you have a right to the road too. Don't ride too far to the right. use the road that you need to stay in control. If you try to stay too far right, you risk running into road debris. Additionally, drivers tend to try to squeeze by you if you are too far over.

I'd go to a local bike shop and see where local enthusiats ride. Maybe join a local club and meet some riders near you. They can also help with a bike. However, for a first road bike, it's never a bad idea to buy used. There are some good values on ebay. Just be sure to get measured first so you know what sizes to look for.
