I agree with the person above me - plan to go out to eat right after he is released. Go where ever he wants, because he's been eating at the chow hall for months (my hubby chose Pizza Hut, and the place was packed with other guys he'd just graduated with). Also, make sure you bring him some civilian clothes. He'll love to be able to change into his favorite jeans and t-shirt for the first time in a long time.
Other than that, lots of time with you is probably all he'll want.
If you have the money (or maybe a bunch of you could go in on it together), an iPod is a great gift, especially if he'll be deploying soon. My husband couldn't live without his when he's deployed.

Food, drink and well..... you know. All what he is craving most of all.
If he is going back to training, being reassigned elsewhere, whatever the case something small and portable. A letter explaining how you feel about him, a picture and if you can a small locket with you two in it. But best of all a ring (even a toe ring or an earing) that you always wear. Something to keep in his pocket and remind him of you. This goes so much further than a big present.

The best present you could give is to make him feel like he the most special person in the world before he deploys, his moral will be high and his awareness.

A nice meal and a new outfit. You get really hungry for good food and get tired of wearing the same dirty uniform all the time.

One of the things he'll want most is a trip to a really good all-you-can-eat restaurant.
