I studied MS in the US and had opportunity to see large number of Indians straying away from their B.E civil, mech, etc to MS in CS. There was even one MBBS student who enrolled for MS in CS !!!

Therefore, the question IMHO is quite valid.

As for the why part, as most have concurred, it is the money and then the herd mentality.

While others may have switched their careers over to IT, i personally QUIT from IT, because for me working for others mainly meant currying favours to your bosses (i.e., licking their soles, whatever). And since I felt I would rather do my job right than spend time sucking up to the bosses, I always ended on the recieving end.

Finally being disgusted with all of this, I simply strayed over to another field that I am thoroughly engrossed in right now.

The most common answer is money and also trend. Indians have a tendency to follow the trend so for example now all guys are becoming software engineers so they know its emerging fields so all try for that. But still you can find some stupid people who drop software engineering and choose something else. I was software engineer and I decided to do PhD in Bioinformatics. One should do what he/she likes what he has interest in etc.

There are two basic reasons:
1. Lack of sufficient number of positions available in core fields such as mech and chem.
2. Requirement of more and more people in IT field

This is the current situation in the market. But it can change.
Today there are hundreds of IT companies in India all big ones in terms of employment.

I can tell u from my experience -- I'm a fresh engineer(comp sc.)recruited in Asia's biggest software firm-- that its much easier to get in IT than to be in a core field.
Moreover the salary in IT fields grow at faster rate than the core fields. If u remain in IT field for 2 years your salary doubles. There's no such growth in any field.

I have been an engineer for almost 30 years. In that time I have seen two people move from engineering to software. It pays less and doesn't present as much of a challenge. Where are you getting your information from ?

as a civil engineer am also having the same doubt like you in my mind..the media changes the students mind..moreover parents are compelling the pupils to choose this courses..they can earn more money if they joined in the software but they have to remember that it is not a permanant one..

Major reason being the salary, apart from that, in the chem & mech fields, the work is hectic compared to the salary.

Engineers are service providers - professional - they go where the work is.

India hardly has any new maufacturing or production boom happening. Now look at IT - we dare to challange the world.

so that helps i suppose....
