First, I wouldn't. You see, when you go to a store to BUY the disk, you have confidence that it did not get corrupt. You also end up with the Disk, so if there is trouble, you can simply re-install it. Yes, if your hard drive fails for some other reason, you have your software still. Yes, you can take the time to BURN a CD of the download, but HEY, buy the disk.

Sometimes, the Anti-virus disk is DISCOUNTED at the retail store for LOWER than the downloadable version. It is often discounted more at the retail store, then you can buy on-line at places like Amazon or Best Buy.

Sometimes people will work their tail off to save 2 bucks. Sometimes, they are in a hurry, only to spend even more time dorking around with downloads and such.

HEY, if your computer currently HAS a virus, then the download might get corrupt, or maybe the anti-virus program won't install anyway. Sometimes the manufacturer's disk has a boot sector on it, so you can run the quickscan feature from that; so your computer gets cleaned up before you install.

Trend Micro has a free online scanner called Housecall. Try that out.
