What happens when you get photos developed at Wal-Mart but you don't pick them up? Do the employees go through them and take them home to their personal picture albums?

Most of the times the photos are put into a box and stored for a certain amount of time. After that, they are destroyed. For most places, it is against policy to take any photos home. However, I'm sure people don't always follow the rules. But, for the most part, they will wait for a specific amount of time, and then shred the photos and the negatives. You probably have a couple months, but that again depends on how short on storage they are. We usually kept ours for a couple years actually. But if they've only been there a couple weeks, you're probably ok.

Policy in my lab is to shred after 90 days. Many times I hold them longer and try to get the person to come and pick up their prints. It is really irritating, and I have several repeat offenders.

So, all you people, go pick up your photos that have been sitting in the lab for months!

I think it really depends on the place where the photos were developed. In most cases they are destroyed or thrown away.

If you don't pick them up, they are usually just thrown away.
