The local tree huggers are telling me that I need to use garbage cans like other people. I prefer to dig a hole and bury it. What's the difference anyway?

As long as it's biodegradable trash and is at least 100 feet away from your well, it should not be an issue ecologically though aesthetically it may be one.

I know you're not really doing this because I'm sure there's an ordinance against it but landfills are safe places to dump garbage. They are constructed so toxic chemicals cannot leach out into the surrounding areas.

Nothing, as long as you don't mind your neighbors shooting the coyotes and racoons digging in your yard, the inevitable smell and the lawsuits when some kid gets tetanus from running through your yard.

The garbage will eventually seep through your drinking water and the smell will seep up from the ground.

well one thing is that it looks weird when you do that, why dont you save your time and energy by just putting your garbage in cans? as easy as that! your garbage needs to be in the right place, not everywhere you would like it to be

When you dig garbage down you could damage drinking water and that is not good.

It's not as easy as you think. Unless those burried are dry leaves otherwise you may be inviting troubles. I suggest you follow advice from the professionals.

it contaminates drinking water when it decomposes and leaks in to the water table. unless you are talking about burying natural stuff only.
