It is good for you because tradition celebrates this day as the day ALL MAN KINDS SIN was forgiven by the selfless act of Christ dying on the cross.

Several reasons:
1) Jesus said his death was the ransom for many people under the power of Satan.
2) Jesus was executed because he stood up for the poor and the outcast and lambasted the authorities of the time for creating poverty while they got rich and using religion to make outcasts of people. Since this message really empowered the "outsiders" he was a threat to the authorities who conspired to kill him.
3) Jesus taught to not return violence for violence and to forgive your enemies. On Good Friday he lived this out by allowing himself to be executed (rather than fighting which perpetuates violence or running which would have invalidated everything he had worked for). Jesus prayed for and forgave for his enemies as they tortured and executed him.

Many great historical figures like Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, Bishop Desmond Tutu and even Ghandi acheived great things by imitating Jesus.

It's "good" because Jesus went through all of that to bring about the ultimate sacrifice for sin....His life. He did come to a gruesome end, but He beat death, hell and the grave for all of us!!

In the Old Testament, to atone for sins you had to sacrifice a lamb on the alter...but that was just to COVER your sins. When Jesus died, as the Ultimate Sacrificial Lamb, all who believe in Him are CLEANSED of their sins.....and therefore, no longer sinners! Praise God!!

"He gave Himself to die for our sins. He did this so we could be saved from this sinful world. This is what God wanted Him to do." Galatians 1:4

"There is no way to be saved from the punishment of sin through anyone else. For there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we can be saved." Acts 4:12

"If you say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved from the punishment of sin." Romans 10:9

After turning from your sins, and confessing Jesus as Lord of your life, you are forever known as a Child of God!!

I think that the Christians think of this as a GOOD day because Jesus died for their sins. What happened to Jesus (or should I say - what he allowed to happen to him) wasn't necessarily good - but the fact that he died for their sins, ulitmately, was a good thing - thus - GOOD Friday.

theres nothing 'good' about Jesus' death EXCEPT for the fact the we, who are saved, will be with Him in Heaven. thats why we call it good....because if something were to ever happen to us...we will go to be with the Jesus and not satan...and its because of Jesus that we will be with Him and be happy. so we say Good Friday....its the day that Jesus died to give us salvation...its like the clarification of our salvation...yup.

Serious answer:

The name "Good Friday" came from the earlier English name, "Godes Friday," meaning "God's Friday." In much the same way as "God be with ye" was shortened to "goodbye," so did "Godes Friday" become "Good Friday."
