I know several couples that instead of having kids and all the good and bad that come with them, instead get dogs or cats and treat them like kids. I think that some of them aren't willing to make the financial sacrafice, or give up or change careers to accomodate a new baby. What will happen? Will people just buy kids from other countries that have more than they need, like some celeberties do? Should you be worried that fluffy might become your cousin? Do you care?

I don't think those people make the majority of people on the planet. Actually chances are the most of the people who have pets, have children too and maybe that was the reason to get pets in the first place. Then, you can't judge people without knowing their situation well. They might have a reason for not having children that you don't know of, so it's not fair to make generalizations like that. And then, even if they don't want to have children for totally selfish reason, it is probably better to not have children at all (as long as they don't use abortion as a method of family planning) than to add to the number of unhappy people on the planet.

I don't have any children by choice. I have been married for almost 6 years. Having a child for me is not something I want. I don't have anything against it, but it's just not for me. I do, however, have a mini doxie that is my "son". I have had him for almost 13 years and I do treat him like his is my child. I am sure that the reasons that people do not have children is as varied as people are. My reasons are pretty simple. My family history with health concerns is pretty bleak. My financial situation is not the best. With these two big concerns, I felt it appropriate to not bring a child into the world with two big strikes against him. I have many nieces and nephews and most of my friends have children, so if I need to be "maternal", I just borrow them! Also, I don't believe that I would be the best mother. I wouldn't want to screw up my kid psychologically any more than giving him bad genes.

I started with animals, the more children I had the less animals I had, now that my children are getting older, I have a ton of animals again. I don't care what others to. People adopting from foreign countries aren't BUYING children like pets, they are adopting and paying fees for paperwork, the cost of other children left in the system, flights, medical care etc.
No I shouldn't worry about fluffy being my cousin. I could care less.
I pay attention to my family and take care of them.

Well, they probably are. Children are getting much more expensive to take care of and nowadays, people work longer hours in order to supplement their income. It used to be that one person's income was enough to feed a family and now, at least both spouses need to work because of the economy which means less time to take care of children. As a result, people are having less children in industrial societies because it's not as beneficial as having 5 to help with the farm in agricultural societies. Some people have kids even though they don't want to because everyone they know is pressuring them to do it. What is better, having no children, or having them because of pressure from other people? Also, what is wrong with adoption? I don't see you adopting impoverished children. At least those celebrities are doing it because they're trying to encourage people to do the same thing instead of being obsessed like some people with having children of their "own blood" and ignoring those who are not "their own."

there is no shortage of humans on the planet so i'm not worried. pets probably use fewer resources.
unfortunately its people who have lots of resources that do this while many already born kids go wanting of attention, education, good parenting etc. these folks should at least consider being a big-brother or big-sister or helping out at a school or coaching a kids' basketball team. or in their case how about teaching kids how to train dogs. because kids need functional grown ups.

I think you're mostly right--with kids come a lot of uncertainty, extra expenses, and a lot more hassle. As far as what will happen, don't worry--the only place the human population is declining is Europe. And I'm sure they'll think of something to attract more people to come live over there.
