Right now im a 16 year old Sophomore who lives in South Carolina. I go to a private school with a good reputation and I get good grades(about 3.5 GPA) but I don't take any AP classes yet and im probably not in the top 40% of my class. I come from a military family and have a Dad that was in the Navy for 27 years and made the rank of Captain as a surgeon. I also have 20/20 eyesight which is necessary. I know that you have to get a letter from your state senator, but as of now how do I look for getting in?

You are pretty well rounded, but your GPA is not competitve with the other people you will be competing with. Most Academy applicants have a 4.0 or higher GPA. I would kick some butt on your grades and maybe look into a local branch of JNROTC or Sea Cadets to add to your list of good things to do. Sorry it is so hard to get in, but the Academy has a very demanding academic program plus the million other things you have to do besides school work. If you are having problems now and you aren't taken AP classes you may have trouble when you get there. Make sure you get some AP classes under your belt too. If this is something you really want you are going to have to work on nothing but yourself for the next 2+ years to make yourself the same level as the normal candidates in order to get the letter and the acceptance you are seeking. Good luck.

Contact your Senators, and any other Congressperson you can. But that is really outstanding. I have received a Congressional Nomination to USMMA on way less than that, and am waiting for an appointment now. If you do not get into the Academy, I will really be surprised, that is very outstanding. And just to let you know, everyone knows a General or an Admiral. I could have gotten a letter of reccomendation from the previous Captain of the USS Texas. But really, you are set just with that. For your Congressional Nomination, get a letter of Reccomendation from your CO, (Maybe another NSCC officer), the USN LCDR, and some other teachers. It should still help. (And just to clarify, you AREN'T a Senior, correct? Because if so, too late for this year.)

At best I think you are marginal, weak academics, but you have time to improve that. I was similar when seeking entry to the Air Force Academy, so you can make it. Keep in mind that no matter what you do, or who you know, you will have to take competitive exams to get a slot. These are not things you can really study for, and the results are pretty much 'cast in stone' as part of the selection process. I do not know the rate at this time, but when I applied for the AF Academy, there were 16 applicants for each slot. Hey, if you live in the Charleston area, go check out The Citadel, I believe they have Naval ROTC. Just a thought, can't have to many options can you? Good Luck

You are correct in stating that you can't just apply, you have to be appointed by some big wig like a congressman, or senator, or the President. Your 3.5 GPA , I think will not get you in. It is dog eat dog where admissions to the m ilitary academies are concerned. The other day, I read in the newspapers wher the Ivy League colleges turn down people with a near 4.0 GPA and perfect scores on the ACT and SAT tests.

dont listen to all these people....my friend had a GPA like yours from high school, didn't come from a military family and had no extracirriculars and just graduated from the Naval Academy last year.

People cite the Ivy league and make other outrageous comparisons, let me tell you something, military academies are FAR from Ivy League institutions. If you maintain that good GPA, the extracirriculars, take an AP class or two, you will be fine. I know prior service Marines who got in the Naval Academy with a TERRIBLE high school academic record.

i would bring your grades up and try to get into some AP classes and if you can take an engineering class if your school has one, that is good that you are a boy scout that would look good. if i were u i would start doing sports every season i would do track football and wrestling i don't now about Navy but Army loves wrestlers. i want to go to west point and im 13 but i have been talking to people so i know some. If your school has JROTC then do that . i hope to see u at an ARMY NAVY game.. we need to stick together and fight those chinese.

It sounds like you've done research and answered many of your own questions. You still might have a chance if you do extremely well in your junior year etc. but I am afraid your chances of getting into Annapolis are very slim. That being the case, it is NO excuse not to give 200% of what you have in trying. There are many other schools with great ROTC programs that would be glad to have an obviously high perfomer like you....Good Luck
