Apparently, few people got the question. The name 'India' comes from the 'Indus River' in the region. The name 'Indus' itself is a Latinization of 'Hindu'

It got its name from the river flowing through it which was Sindhu. When Mughals invaded India, they couldn't pronunce the 'S' & hence called it Hindustan, the Greeks & other Europeans could not pronounce 'H' & so called it India.
Recently there was a controversy regarding the occurence of the word Sindhu in the National Anthem - Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha....
But the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal as it was proved that India got its name form Sindh.
So the residents of Sindh became Sindhi & later on the Residents of Hindustan became Hindus.
The River was called Sindhu b'coz its position in India was corresponded to that of the 'Sindoor' in an Indiam woman's forehead. Hence the name Sindhu.

I hope that my answer was informitive & that I've helped you.

To me it means a lot - I really love my motherland.
To the world it means business with sane and culture respecting populations (a thumb to the nose to all those violent and intolerant masses).
To many religions it means their birth place and heartland. No pilgrimage is complete without coming to India.
To tourists it means an unforgettable experience (believe me there can not be any place better).
To Historians it means a place that has witnessed and has the impressions of every major event in human history.
To all those who do not like it it means an unlearnt lesson.

Ravi is right.

Sindhu is Sanskrit, which became Hindu in Persian, which became Indus in Greek.

It's the river beyond which ancient India lay.
