Interesting, I have always wondered. Personally, I am persuaded by the answer above.

I am a Catholic and I eat fish on Friday. Not because I have been "programmed", not because the Holy Father says so, but because I just feel like it! There's no deep meaningful religious explanation ... I think it's just a tradition which originated from expedience.

Frying tonite ... mussels and dried apricots with linguine!
Can't wait.

Because on the day when the multitude was hungry, someone had some stinky fish and so Jesus used that to feed the people. Why couldn't that person have had a good all beef hot dog and a bag of Lay's potato chips. Man, I would be looking forward to Fridays now!!!

When this rule came into effect, only wealthy people were affected, as poor people usually didn't eat much meat because it was so expensive. It was a way for rich people to be humbled and empathize with the poor.
Fish was seen as a food for the poor, as it was plentiful and didn't require any investment in land, etc.

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

With love in Christ.

Because they have been programmed to do what their HOLY FATHER (The POPE, Not GOD) wills them to do.

Free Will - All food is part of God (the Universe), as such, eat what you want in remembrance of God (not Jesus).
