I take a melatonin tablet everynight before bed. It helps so much. Its natural and you dont wake up feeling like crap like you do from taking those other things. Cold and flu medicind is for just that, not to get to sleep. Tell your mom and dad that its natural and you find them in the vitamin section. Sweet dreams!!

I had this same problem so I would really like to help you. My problem started at 16 and I am now 24 and it just stopped about 6 months ago. Believe me when I say cold or flu medicine is NOT the answer! They can cause stomach bleeding if you take that stuff too often, not to mention when you're actually sick and you try to take that stuff it won't work since people who take too much of any medicine may eventually become immune to them. Anyway, what I did was I stayed up ALL night and day for an entire 24 hours making sure I did whatever I could all day to make myself tired out (laundry, exercise, etc), then when 9pm came around the following night I just passed out in my bed! And when I woke up at 7am the next morning, I stayed awake and started exercising (to wake myself up) and ever since that night I have been on a great schedule where I'm asleep by 11-11:30pm and up and refreshed for work at 6:30am. It's a great feeling especially when you've had the problem as long as I've had. If this does not work 4 you then you should go see a doctor as people HAVE died from insomnia. I wish you the best and I hope I could help.

You should definitely first make sure that this isn't something more serious with your health, you don't have trouble sleeping because you sweat excessively at night, etc.?

In other case... since you cannot get sleep medication Rx through a doctor because of your parents -besides, it's never good to be dependent on Rx when you're so so young- I suggest you try relaxation methods (IT REALLY DOES HELP) and supplement it occasionally with natural supplements like Valerian or melatonin? Only occasionally though, you can also get addicted to these.

ALSO, cut out caffeine and food 3 hours before you go to bed, and do not exercise at night either, it gets your blood pumping and you'll be too pumped to sleep... and DO stay up late (not TOO late).

Make sure there is NOTHING in your environment that can disrupt your sleep, like streetlights (I personally was having sleep problems and turned out it was the streetlights and early morning train noise...) and noise. Eye mask, etc. might help...

Please don't start popping cold/flu medicine!!!

I hate to sound like your mother, but here goes: First and foremost, get on a schedule. Try to go to bed the same time each evening. Take a nice warm bath; go ahead, do it the old fashioned way with a long soak in the tub. Add some lavender; it's very calming. You might even sprinkle some lavender scented powder in your sheets. Try opening window slightly and leave the room rather cool. Don't eat or read or even watch tv in bed! Associate the bed ONLY with sleeping. Once you're in, try relaxing your whole body, one muscle at a time. Start with your toes, and mentally, move up your body. Breathe slowly and clear your mind while you relax your body. Ask your mother for a massage now and then. [You can return the favor} Don't load up on soda with caffeine during the day. You might try an inexpensive CD with ocean or nature sounds to help you drift away. A mask might help or even a cold washcloth placed over your eyes. Here's a great tip. Try counting your blessings, not sheep. Seriously, relaxxxxxxxxxx and bring every pleasant thing you can think of to mind. I have a feeling you will drift right off into a peaceful sleep with lovely dreams. {may angels watch over you as you slumber; hey, that sounds rather poetic!!] God bless you.

I've had trouble sleeping for... a long time! Here's what I do to make it better.

1) Keep your bedroom for sleeping only. Train yourself to do other things in other rooms in the house, and use your bedroom for sleeping.

2) Keep a schedule. Go to bed at the same time, and get up at the same time, even on weekends. It sucks to set an alarm on the weekend -- but if you sleep until noon, you won't be sleepy until after midnight, which sets you up for a disturbed sleep cycle during the week when your hours are different. Just.... suck up with the alarm clock, it really does help.

3) Don't eat or watch movies or do anything exciting before bed. Read for a hour, or play a boring computer game like Solitaire. The idea is to let your mind naturally wind down from thinking, so you don't do it in bed.

4) If you find that after 45 minutes in bed you're still tossing and turning, get up and read again for half an hour, then try again. The idea is that you don't want to "train" yourself into thinking of your bed as a place to toss and turn, but as a place to sleep.

It helps me to have my pillows and blankets neat before I get into bed, so nothing tangles around my feet to annoy me. I also take melatonin and/or valerian to help my body relax. They aren't addictive like cold medicines can be, and they don't contain all of those other medications that you don't need. Plus, most cold medicines have moved away from the type of antihistimine that made people drowsy, so you're just dosing yourself up for no good reason at all.

Insomnia is usually caused by life problems that are bothering you. Depression, anxiety disorders and things like this are what keep people from getting a good night's sleep. You probably need someone to talk to. What happened to you when you were 13 to make you stop sleeping?
Your parents are right, drugs are not the answer, and that includes cold and flu medication. Have a serious discussion with your mom if you can, or ask her to find you a therapist or talk to your family doc about your inability to sleep. But, you need to tell them your deepest thoughts or you won't get the deep sleep you need.
There are also foods you may be eating, exercising before sleeping, smoking cigerettes, and things like this which are stimulents and may be keeping you from getting a good night's sleep. I've included a website for you with causes and tips which might help you out.

But see that doctor! You are much too young to suffer!

All my best, sweetie.

I don't know if this is a mind over matter thing, but I used to be quite depressed and had trouble sleeping, so I got some White Chestnut from Bach flower remedies. I have a couple of drops before I go to sleep, just on the back of the tongue, and for me, it just relaxes me for going to sleep. It doesn't work everynight, but it does most. It's not really addictive either, you may just form a habit or reliance I guess.
Is there maybe something on your mind that keeps you awake at night, or stress, nightmares etc? I always read at night too, so that is good cos it tires your eyes.

Try staying up a little longer before you go to bed, also make sure you have a long hot shower or bath. You could try deep breathing and concentrate only on your breathing,- in through the nose and out through the mouth, slowly. Good luck, I know all about sleepless nights, and this has helped me.
