How young are the kids? Last year I picked out a kitten at the shelter. There were 3 siblings, all black. I didn't pick the most active or the quietest kitty. Ever since she has been growing up with a now 2-year old boy. The kitten trusted him from day one and was drawn to all of his motion and activity. Since they've been growing up together they are pretty close.

Just pick a cat that's healthy and active, not withdrawn, and you should be fine. Then teach the child respect for the animal, demonstrate some simple boundaries, and the kids will have a great companion to grow up with.

Go to your local spca or humane society or kitty rescue society and talk to the people there about cats. Some older cats have had children in their lives so will know how to handle little ones, who might pull their tails, pick them up strangely etc. I find domestic shorthairs aka tabbies are usually very good with children. Just remember tho cats like kids are a lifetime investment, they'll need shots, vet visits , claws trimmed and can live to be in their 20s if treated well. My little Jazzy will be 2 on the fifthteenth and she is the second rescue kitty I've had in the last 14 years . She's a calico /tabby cross.

There are a LOT of cat breeds, but cats the same breed could be really good with kids like mine, or they could be evil. One way to see if a cat is nice and everything is to look inside their mouth when they yawn. I've heard that if the top of their mouth is completely pink they should be nice. If it is completely or partially black they might not be as nice. Your little sister should be really careful with a kitten, they do bite when annoyed. Good luck!

I went to the shelter and got a kitten with my two year old and the shelter people kept telling me not to. I did anyway and they are best friends. My cat is very tolerant ( I got lucky). So anyway, I would say I guess it depends on the length of the hair. I got a domestic short hair because of the amount of hair. I just figured a long hair cat creates more dander and hair balls and that is not the best for a little ones respiratory system. All cats are great but I would just go by the amount of hair for the sake of allergies and asthma. Hope this helped....

There is no particular breed that is better with kids. It is really more about whether or not the child can respect the pet. If your little sister is not old enough to understand how to do that, then no pet is better than harassing some poor little thing.

I would check out local cat rescues. There are so many great pets that need homes! One of the best benifits of a cat rescue society, as opposed to a pet shop or local pound, is that the rescued cats are usually socialized daily. This means that volunteers there can help pick out cats that get along better with children.

I have had good luck with Orange Tabbys. I've had 3 of them in the past 20 years of my life and all were great and had plenty of character. Still have the last one and he is 6 years old and has always been great with my kids 5 and 1 1/2 years old.

ANY kind of kitten is good. It doesn't matter what kind of cat you get. As long as it's one that you like and can live with :) . Pick out a kitten by colors and personality!

an inexpensive choice would be a tabby, orange is my favorite. a tabby is normally very nice and respectful of people and love to be around people. if you want to spend a little more, a rag doll is a very sweet good natured cat, but they can be a little mouthy especially when their favorite person leaves them.

I don't think one breed is really better then another......just don't get a barn cat.....they r very shy and unfriendly. Any kitten that cuddles and purrs, is the right kitten to get.......hope this help......congrats on getting a kitten! : )
